• The History

The New Horizons space mission, launched by NASA on January 19, 2006, stands as a monumental testament to human endeavor, passion, and the unyielding pursuit of knowledge. Embarking on a journey to the farthest reaches of our solar system, New Horizons epitomized humanity's insatiable curiosity and boundless ambition. This mission not only achieved the historic feat of conducting the first-ever flyby of Pluto in July 2015 but also provided the world with the most detailed images and invaluable scientific data about this distant dwarf planet and its moons.

The success of New Horizons is a beacon of human achievement, showcasing our ability to overcome immense challenges through innovation, collaboration, and sheer determination. By venturing into the unknown, New Horizons expanded our understanding of the universe, bringing to light the complexities and wonders of the solar system beyond Neptune. This mission has laid the groundwork for future explorations, inspiring generations to dream big and pursue the unexplored, all in the spirit of advancing knowledge for the greater good of humanity.

As we introduce our new flagship packs: Pluto, Charon & Arrokoth, themed around the New Horizons space mission, we celebrate not just the technical triumphs but the spirit of exploration and discovery that drive us forward. Like New Horizons, we strive to push the boundaries of what is possible, seeking to inspire and uplift through our endeavors. This collection is a tribute to the passion, achievement, and positive impact of human curiosity on our collective quest for understanding and progress.

Key Events

The Journey Begins

Pluto Underground

The inception of the New Horizons mission was born out of a collective dream, a vision spearheaded by a group of scientists and space enthusiasts known as the "Pluto Underground" in the late 1980s. This passionate community advocated for a mission to explore the then-final uncharted planet of our solar system, Pluto. Their unwavering dedication and lobbying efforts culminated in NASA's official approval of the mission in 2001, marking the beginning of an extraordinary journey into the unknown.

The Launch

Atlas 5

The New Horizons spacecraft, a marvel of modern engineering, was launched aboard the mighty Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on January 19, 2006. This marked the fastest spacecraft ever launched, reaching the moon's orbit in just nine hours—a testament to human ingenuity and the thirst for discovery.

Journey to Jupiter

Jupiter & It's Moons

The mission's first major milestone was a gravity assist flyby of Jupiter in February 2007. This critical maneuver not only propelled New Horizons towards its distant target but also provided a valuable opportunity to test its instruments and capture stunning images of the giant planet and its moons. This encounter with Jupiter served as a proving ground, showcasing the spacecraft's readiness for its ultimate challenge.

The Main Event

Pluto

On July 14, 2015, New Horizons made its historic closest approach to Pluto, revealing the dwarf planet in all its glory. The images and data sent back to Earth unveiled a world of unimaginable diversity and complexity, with vast ice mountains, flowing glaciers of nitrogen, and a blue-tinged atmosphere. This encounter with Pluto was a defining moment in space exploration, transforming our understanding of the outer solar system.

Pluto's Biggest Moon

Charon Unveiled

Pluto's largest moon, Charon, also took center stage as New Horizons provided detailed views of its fractured surface and striking canyons. This revealed a history of geological activity and provided insights into the moon's past. The exploration of Charon alongside Pluto emphasized the mission's contribution to expanding our knowledge of celestial bodies beyond the main planets.

Pushing the boundaries

Arrokoth

Following its successful encounter with Pluto and Charon, New Horizons continued its journey to explore the Kuiper Belt. On January 1, 2019, the spacecraft flew past Arrokoth (formerly known as Ultima Thule), a distant Kuiper Belt object. This encounter, the farthest of its kind, provided invaluable data on the formation of the solar system and the processes that govern these distant, icy worlds.

Legacy & Beyond

New Horizons

New Horizons has not only reshaped our understanding of the solar system's outer reaches but also stands as a symbol of human curiosity, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. The mission highlights the power of collaboration, innovation, and the spirit of exploration that drives us to explore far beyond our own planet.
